Haircuts — Chelsea, Manhattan

The Taper Haircut, Engineered to Blend.

The taper is precision barbering at its most technical — a seamless gradient from the shortest point at the neck to the full length on top. Done right, you never see the seam. At Prime Barbershop in Chelsea, we’ve built our reputation on it.

The Men's Taper Haircut: Clean Blend, Lasting Shape

A taper haircut creates a continuous gradient from longer hair on top to progressively shorter hair on the sides and back — but unlike a fade, the hair never disappears entirely. At the lowest point of a taper, you can still see the hair; the reduction is gradual and controlled, producing a refined transition rather than a sharp contrast. This distinction matters enormously in how the cut wears across different settings and hair types. The taper works on virtually every face shape and hair texture because it shapes without overcommitting — it adds structure without removing the softness that makes a haircut feel human.

At Prime, every taper begins with a consultation that establishes three things: the starting point of the gradient (low, just above the ear; mid, at the temple; or high, near the top of the sides), the desired length on top, and whether the transition should feel gradual and blended or slightly more defined. That starting point is one of the most consequential decisions in men’s barbering — it sets the proportion of the entire cut and determines how bold or conservative the result reads. Your barber will assess your head shape, hairline, and existing density before recommending a starting point, but the final call is always yours.

The taper is an especially good fit for men who want the discipline of a shorter style without the close-cropped intensity of a fade; for men who work in professional environments where a more conservative cut is appropriate; for men who are actively growing out their hair and want the sides managed and clean while the top accumulates length; and for men who are transitioning away from a more casual or grown-out look toward something with deliberate shape. It is also an excellent first cut for men who are new to working with a barber — the taper is forgiving enough to leave room for adjustment and specific enough to produce an immediately visible improvement.

Because the taper’s defining quality is its gradient, it shows growth more quickly than a blunt cut. As the hair grows, the transition points shift and the clean line between lengths blurs — which is why we recommend returning every three to four weeks for a full taper refresh. Between appointments, our shape-up service ($18) can extend the neckline and around-the-ear line, preserving the perimeter of the taper while the rest of the cut continues to develop. Many of our regular taper clients book both: a full taper every four weeks and a shape-up at the midpoint.

The Taper Haircut at Prime is $45 for approximately 45 minutes. You can book online via Booksy, call us at +1 (646) 912-9368, or walk in at 201 9th Ave in Chelsea, Manhattan. We are open Monday through Friday 8am–8pm, Saturday 8am–7pm, and Sunday 10am–7pm.

FAQ

Common Questions About the Taper Haircut

From what a taper actually is to how often to maintain it — everything you need to know before booking at Prime.

A taper haircut gradually reduces the hair length from longer on top to shorter on the sides and back, but never takes the hair down to the skin. The hair remains visible throughout the gradient — even at the lowest point of the taper, you can see it. A fade, by contrast, takes the hair all the way to skin level or near-skin at the lowest point, creating the signature “disappearing” effect. Both are precision techniques requiring clipper control and an understanding of head shape, but they produce fundamentally different visual results.

The taper is more conservative and works in more professional environments. It grows out more gracefully than a fade because the transition never reaches skin — so as the hair grows, it blends rather than contrasts. The fade produces a sharper, more contemporary look but requires more frequent maintenance to keep the skin-close portion looking intentional rather than grown-out. If you are unsure which is right for you, our barbers will help you decide during the consultation.

Approximately 30 minutes from the start of the consultation to the final style and send. The consultation is especially important for tapers — establishing the starting point, the gradient feel, and the top length takes a few minutes of intentional conversation that shapes every decision that follows. First-time taper clients, or clients who are making a significant change to their usual style, may run slightly longer than returning clients who know exactly what they want.

Every 3 to 4 weeks is the recommended cadence for a full taper refresh. The gradient is the defining feature of the taper, and growth disrupts it faster than a blunt cut — as the hair grows, the transition points shift and the clean starting line blurs. At three weeks, most tapers are still holding their shape. By five weeks, the gradient has usually softened to the point where the cut no longer reads as a taper.

A shape-up service ($18 at Prime) can refresh the neckline and around-the-ear line at the 2.5 to 3 week mark, extending the life of the taper between full appointments. Many clients combine a full taper every four weeks with a shape-up at the two-week midpoint — this keeps the perimeter crisp while the gradient continues to develop.

Walk-ins are welcome at Prime Barbershop based on current availability. If you want a specific barber, a guaranteed slot on a Saturday, or a particular time of day, booking ahead is recommended. You can book 24/7 through Booksy — available at the link on our website or directly via the Booksy app. Weekday mornings and early afternoons generally offer the most same-day walk-in flexibility; weekend afternoons tend to fill quickly.

The three taper types differ in where the gradient begins — the starting point — relative to the ear. A low taper starts just above the ear and along the neckline, creating a subtle, barely-there reduction that is most visible from the back. It is the most conservative option and is ideal for formal environments or for men who prefer a look that does not draw attention to the cut itself.

A mid taper starts at the temple, roughly level with the top of the ear. This is the most versatile starting point — and the most commonly requested at Prime — because it creates visible, intentional structure without the drama of a high starting point. It reads well across virtually every professional and social context.

A high taper starts near the top of the sides, close to where the sides begin to curve into the top. This creates the most contrast between the sides and the top and is the taper that comes closest to a fade visually — without actually taking the hair to the skin. It is the boldest of the three options and suits men who want a sharp, defined look while retaining visible hair at all points.

The most useful information to have ready: the starting point (low, mid, or high), how sharp or blended you want the transition to feel, whether you want the neckline defined (outlined with the razor for a clean edge) or tapered (blended out so it fades naturally), and how much length you want to keep on top. If you are unsure about the starting point, tell your barber your occupation and lifestyle — they can recommend one based on how you need the cut to read. A photo reference from your phone is always welcome and speeds up the consultation significantly.
