The Men's Classic Haircut: Timeless, Precise, and Built to Last
The classic haircut — sometimes called a regular haircut — is the most enduring service in men’s barbering, and for good reason. Short on the sides, longer on top, finished with a natural taper and a clean neckline: this is the cut that has defined what it means to look sharp since the early twentieth century. At Prime Barbershop in Chelsea, we do not treat it as a simple or basic service. We treat it as the foundation of everything.
Every classic haircut at Prime begins with a consultation. Your barber will ask about your style preferences, your face shape, your hair texture, and your daily routine. Are you someone who styles every morning, or do you want a cut that looks right with minimal effort? Do you work in an environment that rewards a conservative look, or do you have room to express personality through your hair? These are the questions that determine what your classic cut actually looks like — because no two are the same.
The cut itself is executed with scissors and clipper, using techniques refined over thousands of repetitions. The sides are tapered to blend seamlessly with the top — not a dramatic fade, but a precise, gradual reduction that reads as polished rather than bold. The top carries enough length to be combed, parted, or left textured depending on your preference. The neckline is finished with a straight razor for a clean edge that holds up in the mirror and in photographs.
For men in Chelsea who want a regular haircut that looks like it came from someone who actually knows what they are doing — this is it. Whether you are walking into a Midtown boardroom, a West Village dinner reservation, or a Saturday morning on the High Line, the classic haircut gives you the confidence that your hair is doing exactly what it should.
Priced at $45 for approximately 30 minutes. Book online via Booksy or walk in at 201 9th Ave, Chelsea, Manhattan.

Common Questions About the Classic Haircut
Everything you need to know before booking — from what to expect at your first visit to how to maintain the look at home.
What exactly is a classic haircut, and how is it different from a regular haircut?
A classic haircut and a regular haircut are the same thing — the terms are used interchangeably in most barbershops, including Prime. It refers to the foundational men’s haircut: shorter on the sides and back with more length on top, finished with a natural taper and a clean neckline. What makes it “classic” is that this structure has defined men’s grooming for over a century and continues to work across virtually every face shape, hair type, and lifestyle. At Prime, we use the term Classic Haircut because it reflects the standard of craft we bring to it — not because it is a different service than what you might call a regular cut.
How long does the Classic Haircut take at Prime Barbershop?
The Classic Haircut at Prime takes approximately 30 minutes, which includes the initial consultation, the cut itself, and the finish and styling at the end. We do not rush this service. If your hair requires additional attention — particularly thick or textured hair, or longer top length — the appointment may run slightly longer, which we accommodate without cutting corners on the result. First-time clients often take slightly longer as the consultation is more thorough on the initial visit.
How often should I get a classic haircut to keep it looking sharp?
For most men wearing a classic haircut, four to six weeks is the ideal cadence. At four weeks, the cut still looks intentional and maintained. By six weeks, it begins to look grown-out in a way that becomes noticeable. If you add a shape-up at the three-week mark between full haircut appointments — available at Prime for $18 — you can extend the life of the cut significantly. We offer standing appointments for clients who want a consistent slot reserved on a regular schedule.
Do I need to book in advance or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are always welcome at Prime based on current availability. For a specific barber, a weekend slot, or the certainty that you will be seen at a particular time, booking ahead is recommended. You can book online 24/7 through Booksy — linked from our website — or call us during business hours. First-time clients who have a specific style in mind may want to arrive a few minutes early to allow a fuller consultation before the appointment slot begins.
What should I bring or tell my barber at my first visit?
A reference image is always helpful — not because your barber needs it, but because it speeds up the consultation and ensures both of you are imagining the same result. Your phone is fine. Beyond that, be ready to answer a few questions: how much length you want to keep on top, how short you want the sides, whether you prefer a defined part or a more natural fall, and how much time you spend on your hair each morning. If you are unsure about any of these, say so — your barber will guide the conversation and offer recommendations based on your face shape and hair type.
What is the best hair product for a classic haircut?
For most classic haircut styles, a water-based pomade or a medium-hold clay works best. Layrite Natural Matte Cream is our most recommended product for classic cuts worn with a natural, unproduced finish — it gives you the hold to keep the shape without the shine that makes hair look worked. If you prefer a more polished, side-parted look, Layrite Original Pomade delivers a medium hold with the high shine that complements a combed classic style. Both are available at Prime in-shop and online at primebarbershop.com/products/.
